For those that missed the Pre swap meet "meet" at Don Crenshaws, you missed a great time. Thanks Don for hosting this once again!!! The coolest thing to happen in a long time was the arrival of an old WWF member that had dissapeared for a few years. Well Chris Baldwin is back and with avengence!!! He arrived in a beautiful 400 Convertible with 472 CID Ram Air II headed round port powered 1967 Firebird!! Soon as I saw those 96 heads I was in awe!! Well the weirdest thing about these heads were they are truly RA II 1968 heads but the date code was dated A229? This does not make sense since RA 4s were already being cast for 1969s back in October of 1968 for the 1969 model years. So why an overlap. Well it turns out that there were ony 3 dates that they cast the RAIIs after original production of 1968. Here is the info that I got from a friend I met from the Performance years who I visited in Connecticut.

(The RA II heads were cast on 3 dates in 1969 - January 20, 22 & 23. They are distinctive in that they all have a cut mark across the 9 & 6. These were service dated heads sold/given to racers for pure stock and sold over the counter.)

So this clears up my unknown knowledge of the infamous 1968 RA II 96 heads dated A229.

It is always cool to find out more little details of the things that pontiac did back in the day. Nothing is ever cut and dry as we think.
